Amplified Phones for the Hard of Hearing
In discussing hearing loss denial Dr. Neil Baumann states, "Not until the pain of reality becomes greater than the pain of denial, will he [who is in denial] have any real incentive to change."
A 1999 survey by NCOA found out that two-thirds of the older, non-hearing aid user respondents cited that their hearing was "not bad enough” or that they could "get along" without a hearing aid. The study also revealed that those with untreated hearing loss were "more likely to report depression, anxiety, and paranoia and were less likely to participate in organized social activities" than those who wear hearing aids!
If you are part of the "silent sufferers" group, chances are that you're also having difficulty talking to your friends and family over the telephone. If you're not quite ready for hearing aids, please consider getting yourself an amplified phone. You'll be glad you did!
What amplified phone should I get?
Amplified telephones are specifically designed for those who are hard of hearing. Amplified telephones are available with different degrees of amplification depending on the severity of a person's hearing loss. At Assistech we carry amplified phones for mild, moderate and severe hearing loss. If your hearing loss is profound, you'll need a TTY or a captioned telephone instead.
If you're not sure which amplified phone to get, consult the Amplified Phone Wizard or the Amplified Phone Guide. You may also click on the picture to select an amplified phone at the bottom of this page.
